History Channel starts series on classic rock music

Sunday, May 25, 2008 |

The History Channel, an infotainment television channel, has launched a 17-part special series on classic rock music.

The series 'History Rocks' was launched Friday with a concert by the Indian band 'Parikrama' in the capital.

It will formally go on air June 5 and will present recordings of memorable concerts, rare documentaries and interviews with the cult figures of music and offer a glimpse into the lives of the rock legends spanning four decades of rock music since the '60s, a communique by the channel said.

'It will be a beautiful series because I watched when it was on television the last time. It is being re-launched with several new additions and new features this time, in a completely new avatar. I am looking forward to its inaugural episode on Metallica's Black, the documentary on Bob Marley and Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of The Moon'.

'There is also a docu-feature on Pink Floyd's signature album, which no other channel has shown before,' Subir Malik of Parikrama told IANS Saturday.

Parikrama played 10 originals, which include two new releases - 'Lechaim' (an Israeli word which means 'two lives') and 'Life is Certain' - for the History Channel concert. Besides, it also paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC and Pink Floyd.

The channel will kick off the rock fiesta with a capsule on Metallica's classic album 'Black', which grabbed headlines in the 1980s. The group was billed as the world's biggest thrash metal band, serving music that was faster and louder than anything that mainstream western music had ever heard.

A documentary June 12 will probe the making of U2's classic album 'Joshua Tree' and a behind-the-scene movie on the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album 'The Dark Side of the Moon' will be telecast June 19. A documentary on Jimi Hendrix's 'Electric Ladybird' will be aired June 26.

Other episodes, according to the History Channel, will include those on Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Who, Queen, Deep Purple and Santana.

Two Mumbai based actors, who don't want their lines to be dubbed, are trying to master Tamil to add value to their performance in the Tamil film 'Leelai'.

Shiv Pandit, a radio jockey, and Mansi Parekh, a TV star, have been cast as the lead pair in V. Oscar Ravichandran's 'Leelai'. Usually Hindi speaking stars are asked by directors to mutter 'one-two-three-four-five' with brief pauses at shooting locales to cut costs and save time. Later, dubbing artistes synchronise the lines written to suit the lip movements of the performers. But Shiv and Mansi are determined to speak their won lines.

'In a way, 'Leelai' is a symbol of modern times as a Mumbaiite, Gujaratis and Tamils are collaborating to make it. Like modern day multiplexes uniting films of various genres under a single roof, this film has brought us together for a project in a language hitherto unknown to us,' said Shiv Pandit.

Echoing the same, Mansi, who shot to fame with the TV series 'India Calling' and currently features in the soap 'Remote Control', said: 'To take the analogy further, like dubbed movies from different languages help audiences to comprehend unknown tongues, we too want to emote properly by understanding what we utter because that would add value to our performances.'

Shiv, a R. Madhavan look alike, was spotted by Ravichandran in a soft drink TV commercial, said then publicist of the film.

Three projects of Oscar Films said to have collectively cost over Rs.2.5 billion including Kamal Haasan starrer 'Dasavatharam', touted as the costliest Indian film to date.

Neetu Chandra has gone ahead and done what majority of other leading
ladies are doing today i.e. kissing their leading man for a film.

After being in the industry for close to 3 years, she has shared her
first on-screen lip lock with Abhay Deol. No wonder, Deol would be all
pleased and call himself 'lucky' as this happens for their upcoming
flick Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, which, in sweet and simple manner, can be
termed as OLLO.

Confirms a source on condition of anonymity, "Yes, Neetu indeed has a
kissing scene in OLLO. She has always believed in doing whatever it is
best for the film. She didn't think twice about sharing screen
presence with two other girls even as stakes were so high for Garam
Masala."

She goes on to add, "Later she grabbed the opportunity when Madhur
Bhandarkar finalised her for Traffic Signal. It was a big departure
for her to get into a non-glam role after a playing an airhostess in
her debut film. When everyone was still contemplating around her next
move, she took the risk of being one of the four heroines in One Two
Three. Now everyone knows that she was the one who stood out most in
the role of a Jat cop. This is why when she was told that OLLO would
require her to kiss Abhay Deol, she was game for it. She doesn't
believe in creating any unnecessary fuss!"

Over last few months gone by, there also have been murmurs about Abhay
and Neetu being an item. Wouldn't that too have aided in making her
decision easier?

Laughs the source, "Well, off screen and on screen intimacy are two
different things. While I don't want to comment on the kind of
equation that Neetu and Abhay have in real life, I can say for sure
that on screen they do manage to sizzle. The kissing scene would
surely catch many unaware."

In OLLO, Neetu gets to play a typical Punjabi girl belonging to Delhi
whose wardrobe comprises of casual T-Shirt and Jeans. From an
airhostess costume to a 'kathaiwadi' outfit to a police uniform and
now T-Shirt and Jeans - Neetu seems to be doing it all!

Led by Paresh Rawal from the top, OLLO is a UTV Motion Pictures
production and is aiming for a release during the festive season of
October.

Tania Zaetta has been allegedly accused of having sex with Australian
soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Tania, who has done marginal roles in films by Bollywood's biggest
production house Yashraj Films , finds herself in the middle of a
controversy after the news reports that she purportedly had sex with
Australian soldiers while touring a military base in Afghanistan last
month with a group of entertainers.

The news reports were based on a leaked draft note of Australian
Defence ministry.

However, Tania, who is based in London, has been shocked by the
allegations and has denied the reports in strong words.

"It's complete made-up lies. Apart from being hurtful it's damaging to
a woman's career, to her reputation and I wish someone had come and
asked me before there was any documentation.

"Perhaps I do feel like I need an apology because not only my family
name but my career which I have worked very hard for is suddenly at
stake here," Zaetta is quoted as saying in a statement from London.

37-yr-old Zaetta goes on to say that she was never alone with any
soldiers and that an escort accompanied her even when she went to
toilets at the military base.

After Tania's strong denial, the Australian defense dept has issued an
unreserved apology to her and an inquiry is being made into leaked
briefing note.

Tania entered Bollywood with a role in hit Bollywood movie Salaam
Namaste in 2005. She also played a small role in another hit Bunty Aur
Babli . Earlier this month, Tania was seen playing a role a la
Charlie's Angels in Mr. White Mr. Black .

Krishna Iyer M.A. Narialpaniwala from the highly acclaimed movie
'Agnipath' returns once more. Remember the role Cult Star of Indian
Cinema Mithun Chakraborty played in that Amitabh Bachchan starrer that
failed at box office but filled the bags of its artists with awards
after awards. Mithun's comic timing is superb; he matches the wit by
wit. But to cash on his aura is up to the capability of a director. He
works wonders when he is put in his past and asked to connect it with
future. Mithun is the only star in the present era who won the coveted
National Award in his debut film. Mithun's second inning is turning
stronger and the news is that he has been signed by Ashtvinayak Films
for his latest flick 'Loot in One Crore'.

Alas, this veteran son Asim Samanta ends up making a mockery of his
personality in 'Don Muthuswami'. Two things need to be taken care of
by the filmmakers in general and by Mithun Da in particular. First,
Mithun was a superstar some two decades ago, but the scenario has
changed now. Millions love him even today, but he need not take the
whole burden of a movie on his shoulders. Mithun is an added advantage
to any film, but then the director has to create the ambience for
presenting Mithun in a larger than life role. Second, Mithun Da should
understand economics of present day films. If he is placed against a
strong character, he delivers his best. But in the company of juniors
he fails to show his best on the screen.

'Don Muthuswami' is not a film to entertain. Remember the comedy films
that were once made by the likes of Hrishi Da ; the simpler the plot,
the easier it becomes to make people laugh. Confusing screenplays
don't last forever. The toughest task is to make a comedy film and
director Asim Samanta should have learned it first. Mithun plays the
character of a Don who has promised his dying father to mend ways in
life. He asks all his goons to start working as gentlemen, and to be a
gentleman himself, he starts learning Hindustani. click for larger
view

Now to make a comedy film and put its central character in South
Indian attire is never a smart thing. Mithun no doubt can play any
role on screen, but think of the viewers in Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh,
Bihar and Punjab, why will they get associated with a character who is
from a place, where Hindi is considered an alien language? The whole
difference between Mithun playing a south Indian character in
'Agnipath' and get all the adulation is quite different from what he
has been asked to play in 'Don Muthuswami'. The biggest fault that
Asim Samant does is to put so many weird characters around the Don.

The problem sets in when Don Muthuswami hires a teacher Jai Kishan
(Mohit Rana) to teach him Hindustani. The film gives an impression
that you are about to watch a remake of first 'Golmaal', where Amol
Palekar ends up making a lot of fun. But, Mohit Raina playing Jai
Kishan is for sure not Amol Palekar! He does love Don's daughter
Sanjana (Hrishitaa Bhatt) like Amol Palekar did with Utpal Dutt's
daughter in 'Golmaal', but the entire equation in 'Don Muthuswami'
isn't as simple as in 'Golmaal'. Don too is worried for a right match
for his daughter ( Sanjana ), but she refuses to marry son of her
father's best friend, Don Vardhan. Muthu's close associate Preetam
(Rohit Roy) fixes his eyes on Sanjana.

And before this love triangle is solved, enters one more girl Ranjana,
who declares her love for Preetam straightaway. Preetam is leaving no
stone unturned and works overtime to become rich though it is not the
extra work but the extra effort that he is putting in to do away with
the money of Don Muthuswami. The story turns a full circle when Don
comes to know that his daughter is in love with his teacher. If Don
Muthuswami fails to ignite interest in viewers, it is because of an
ill planning of the film. After all, Asim Samanta must have learnt a
lot while he was growing and watching some classic films of his father
Shakti Samanta.

Asim had access to Mithun Da because of his father and if a gentleman
like Mithun Chakraborty agrees to oblige a director then it is duty of
that director to provide the most suitable role to Mithun Da. Mithun's
last hit 'Guru' is a fine example of his capabilities even when he is
nearing 60. It is the anger that works best for him. Give him a role
that requires a lot of controlled energy to flow from his actions and
eyes, and Mithun will give run for money to any of the current senior
actor. Besides, there is a certain psyche among Mithun's fans; he has
been hero of the poor. He has never been the first choice of multiplex
audience. He is king of his own society that is made of those who eat
Vada Pav in their meal and not those who munch popcorn in theaters.

No actor in the film could match Mithun in his antics, be it Mohit
Raina or Rohit Roy. Even Hrishitaa Bhatt fails to bring in any magic.
The music of the film is below standard. On the whole, 'Don
Muthuswami' makes a dent on Mithun's once again growing career. He
should better take care while choosing roles in his second innings.
Not a bad idea to skip this movie.

Ever since her marriage, Preeti Jhangiani has been on her toes. No,
don't get any wrong ideas. Hubby Parvin Dabas is treating her just
fine. It's just that the two have not had a real honeymoon as yet.
"Ever since I got married, I have been touring the US for shows," says
Preeti, who is pretty excited about married life. "I need a holiday
now," says the actress who is planning to come back to India this
week. And what about honeymoon? "Well, Parvin joined me for eight days
in Miami and Manhattan," she laughs. "I don't think you can call that
a honeymoon." Sad indeed!

DHOOM DADAKKA
DIRECTOR: Shashi Ranjan ACTORS: Shaad Randhawa, Shama Sikander
Iknow after a numbing experience, your mind tends to switch off.
But I tried to keep it active still. And I recommend this film only so
you can tell me what really was going on here. In one scene, one of
the lead actors of this film (Aarti Chhabria), you can observe, has a
red spot at the corner of her eye. You know she's suffering from
conjunctivitis, an epidemic that had broken out in Mumbai, possibly
around this film's shooting schedule. The film perhaps had to be
completed still, and that explains the actor's presence. A little
thereafter we see the girl in dark shades as she enters with her
friends (Sikander, Randhawa, Samir Dattani), all con-people to rob
from a don's (Anupam Kher) room while he's sleeping. One of the
characters asks the girl why she's wearing shades. This is so the
(sleeping) don can't recognise me, she says. That, I thought, was fair
improvisation in a movie that intends to be consistently nonsensical.
But nonsense is serious art. Crazy improvs occasionally work only when
there is just chemistry between the actors and the director (the sorts
of David Dhawan, Govinda comedies), otherwise brightly witty
screenplays (the likes of the rare Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro). This one
shares neither attribute. It doesn't help an entire film has been put
together on improvisations alone. So Mungi (or some such; Kher), a
don, you notice one moment, is shot at in a holi party. You learn
nothing of it later. The final scene, set in a 'don's conference',
abruptly shifts to a long sequence and characters that have absolutely
no relevance to the film so far. That supposedly was the climax. Of
the rest, from what I could vaguely decipher, Mungi wants to wrest
control of a territory from his rival (Gulshan Grover) because he
wants to build a hospital there. The head-don (Jackie Shroff) would
not allow the impotent Mungi to have his way, unless he can prove he
has an heir. He does have an heir, his sister's child called Kamal.
Except, he doesn't know where his long-lost sister or the child is
anymore. Three small-fry fraudsters — one girl, two guys — having
heard of this, land up at the don's doorstep, claiming to be Kamal.
The rest is mystery. From my past horrifying experiences, I intend
some day to send out an audience-advisory for films one should enter
with extreme care, knowing a few things about them. First, if the
movie involves dons any more; it's quite likely you're dealing with a
'crappola'. Second, if it's set in Bangkok (like this one), be
severely warned (it used to be London before; maybe that hasn't
changed either). Third of course, there is a comprehensive list of
actors in the principal cast that I'd like to send out, who make for
more than reasonable indicators to avoid a film (any film). The last
advice is of little relevance here, since the lead actors are
relatively unknown. They're surrounded by very many veterans. Each
goes about a terrible double-entendre or gay-gag lines which are past
their juvenility by now; the sorts where one or the other goes,
"Pategi" (for 'phategi'); 'Maa ki behen' as an expletive; "Meri baj
rahi hai, phone, that is"; "Teri choo… . ing gum", for you know what….
Oh, never mind; I'm the one getting carried away now. If the actors
aren't happy selling cheap, they make unfunny references to a
movie-title (Don, Main Hoon Na etc); or a movie-person (Ranvir Kapoor,
Rakhee Sawant, Mahesh Bhatt, even Madhur Bhandarkar, for God's sake);
or movies in general. You know the general literacy level around here,
and what the makers can claim their staple reading diet to be. The
protagonists play Lokhandwala 'struggling' actors and 'item' girls as
well. The ultimate irony is a scene where one of the characters, a
don's gay son, walks into a store to pick up a costume for a dancer in
his musical. But you haven't chosen the dancer yet, the don (Grover)
asks. The son says he's learnt it all from Bollywood, "The hero comes
before the film, tune before the lyrics." I want to know where this
film is coming from. It's been my obsession with bad flicks lately.
Ranjan's debut, Dobara (2004), if not quite a masterpiece, was a
tolerable road-movie about adult love. I just hit upon an interview
where the director says,"One day when I was sitting with a few friends
over drinks, one of them suggested, 'Why don't you make a whacky
film…" I hope they enjoyed the drinks. We're the ones with a hangover.

One of the reasons there are still not as many films made in Mumbai
in a year is because there are only that many famous faces to
green-light such projects. The big money and phony (or fairly decent)
screenplays floating about only need to be seen to be sat and counted.
Movie-stars are the medium to deliver mainstream films. A dozen of
them can spin around only that many sets at a given time. They don't
simultaneously sign up too movies, and reject several potentially good
ones out of pure fickleness or commercial fears. There are many they
could have still considered but for "date problems".
Imagine if the audiences had entirely warmed up to animation films
as their staple genre. You could do away entirely with starry whims.
Directors would have greater control over their stories and could even
correct mistakes while their movies were being made (you needn't
rebuild sets or call the actors back in). You need only work up
machines and dish out films after films. It'd be so much easier to
expand choices of movie entertainment.
Unfortunately, this city has largely perceived animation as a
filmgenre for mythology, which is still fair-play. They're still
looking at children to warm up seats. Fantasy in India has largely
been a domain of religion; there are hardly any significant works from
more modern fable writers. Likewise, we've seen a couple of animation
versions of Hanuman, a Ganesh or two (and more such). This one is
called Ghatotkatch, named after the gigantic protagonist, the son of
the 'Pandav' Bheem and his unlikely wife, a demon or 'rakshasi'
Hidimba. The source is clearly Ved Vyasa's Mahabharat, which has many
versions, including Amar Chitra Katha's. This is one of them, we're
told.
A bit of the research, you can see, also comes from BR Chopra's
Mahabharat as the wily Shakuni goes "Bhanje bhanje" to Duryodhan's
stern and husky response, "Nahin, mamajee". Little Ghatotkatch is
supposed to be Duryodhan's nemesis. The Kaurav king tries to have the
infant killed right after birth. The baby, half-man, half-demon, a
super-hero already, survives. Little Ghatotkatch is a master magician,
who plays around with baby elephants. He grows up to look a taller
Obelix from the Asterix series. You would think this is a story of his
valour. It isn't.
Ghattu rescues instead his cousin Abhimanyu. The son of Arjun and
Subhadra is engaged to his childhood sweetheart whose parents decide
against the wedding, since the famous Pandav family is in exile now,
and no longer the heirs to Hastinapur. Ghattu gets into action with
his disguises and magic potions and settles this minor matter of
matrimony. The screen abruptly fades to roll out the closing credits.
That's it. Really? Really.
You can sense at once the entire film was in fact a set-up for a
sequel. If only the makers weren't so interested in a franchise
already. That comes so much later.
Mythology as a genre in any case perhaps limits the
contemporariness of a film. Over that, animation in general has
progressed to levels where a new kind of stylised realism even in a
Playstation game can shockingly convince you, without taking away the
wonderful element of fantasy.
I'm not sure if this sort of lowscale, low-grade work, both on
animation and screenplay, can fire up a child's imagination to look
for more. It certainly doesn't mine.
Rao, the filmmaker in his late 70s now, has directed over 40 films
down South. I'm unfamiliar with his work. His last, Mumbai Express
(2005) is hardly much to go by. But if you recall Pushpak, that
incredibly sweet, soundless, rom-com back in the '80s, you'd treat
Rao's talents with respect. This review may well be a subtle excuse to
recommend that chintzy classic, which makes it to several moviebuffs'
list of top-ten films. That silent comedy would have done even Chaplin
proud. Evidently Rao isn't as much a Disney fan.

Sensational Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor are madly in love but they both get very little time to spend with each other due to their hectic schedules. To pass maximum time together apart from work, Deepika has decided to shift to a new apartment nearby to Ranbir's.

Her new apartment would be at a stone throw distance from Krishna Raj, the bungalow of Ranbir Kapoor near the Pali Hill. Shifting near to her boyfriend, Deepika would get to spend maximum time with her beau. It is Ranbir who wanted her to move close to him. She had not only won over Ranbir's heart but bonded quite well with his family. After shifting closer to them, she will get to gel with his parents more intensely.

After Deepika and Ranbir declared their love in public, they are frequently featured by media. Their every move is under scanner and their news has become a fodder for the channels. Ranbir displayed his emotion for Deepika publicly when he blew a kiss to her from the ramp during the Lakme India Fashion Week. Deepika’s association with Ranbir's family is viewed for the first time when she walked the venue with Neetu Singh, chatted and cheered for Ranbir.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has declined to co-star with Hollywood wonder-boy again.

This is the third time she has said no to the besotted Will Smith who in a BBC interview had raved about Rai-Bachchan, "She has this powerful energy where she doesn't have to say anything, do anything, she can just stand there. Anything she's making I'll be there."

Two years ago Will offered Aishwarya the comedy Hitch (later remade into Hindi with Salman Khan as Partner). She couldn't do the film due to time constraints.

In quick succession, Aishwarya has turned down two Will Smith projects.

"That's true," she laughs. "I had to say no to Will for Tonight He Comes (Smith's super-hero flick re-named John Hancock).I feel awful about it. But I've my priorities very straight. Yes, family always comes first."

Contrary to reports Aishwarya didn't decline another Will Smith project The Seven Pounds to celebrate Karwa Chauth with her husband Abhishek in Mumbai.

"That's what they wrote in the US press …that I preferred to return to Mumbai to STARVE myself for a religious occasion than to meet Will for the film. That's completely incorrect.

The script reading for The Seven Pounds was just after Diwali when Dadimaa's (Mrs Teji Bachchan)'s health dipped drastically. So I didn't make that trip out to LA for the reading with Will. Is that wrong? Not to me. I'd any day put family over career."

So are Ash and Will star crossed? "When it has to happen it will happen. We'd love to work together. There's something very charismatic about that actor. He gives off very nice vibes. He's very adventurous as an actor.

He does I Am Legend and Pursuit Of Happiness at the same time. He's an actor, rapper, and a great family man. He likes to be adventurous. I like that."

Making his love interest clear, 'Saawariya' star Ranbir Kapoor blew a kiss straight from the ramp to actress Deepika Padukone. Attired in a black and beige 'sherwani' or Indian-style coat with intricate ethnic motifs at the hemline and sequin work at the collars, the star walked the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) ramp for designer Arjun Khanna here late Saturday.

The sherwani was tastefully teamed with beige churidar and red scarf to give a dramatic effect, the actor's face and hair were painted golden.

'Before I came here I didn't know that my face would be painted golden. Only when I reached the venue and sat on a chair (backstage) to get the make-up done, I got to know about it. But I enjoyed the whole experience,' Ranbir told after the show.

He refused to comment on his romantic link-up with Deepika. Starting with his signature dance step from the title song of 'Saawariya', Ranbir descended on the runway.

And then he spotted Deepika sitting next to his mother Neetu Singh. Cutting short his catwalk, he blew a flying kiss towards her. Deepika blushed and hid her face behind her cascade of hair.

While Deepika sported a light grey tube top with abstract prints matched with slim fit dark blue jeans, yesteryear actress Neetu Singh was decked in white trousers and a kurta top with white, red and blue geometric prints and Swarovski work at the neckline.

'There couldn't have a better confession of love than this. Ranbir made it clear at the LFW that Deepika is his love interest,' said Rashmi Singh, who attended the show.

Unlike his contemporaries, Ranbir did not take expert advice from his ladylove, who was a model by profession. 'No I did not take any tips from Deepika before walking the ramp. I had never walked the ramp before. It was the first time for me but I was quite confident. It proved to be an excellent experience,' Ranbir said.

'Moreover, the Indian fashion industry is growing very fast and if I can contribute a little to it, it would be great,' he added. When asked how fashion conscious he is, Ranbir said: 'I am not fashionable at all. My knowledge about fashion is only through Arjun. Fashion for me is being comfortable.'

After the show, Deepika left the venue with Neetu in the same car. The five-day fashion extravaganza at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) would end on April 2. Fifty-seven designers, established and new, including the likes of Narendra Kumar, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Neeta Lulla, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Wendell Rodricks will show their collections.

Saif has now embedded his royal stamp in Bollywood. Saif has always spelt sophistication and style. And now it is his body of work that speaks realms of his diverse acting talent.

Whether it was Ek Haseena Thi, Dil Chahta Hai, Omkara, Being Cyrus, Parineeta, Salaam Namaste, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Parineeta or the recently released Race, Saif has punched his mark successfully.

Noted trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "The industry always spoke of the three Khans when it spoke of star power — Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman. Then Hrithik Roshan made it to the premium list and also Akshay Kumar. These five actors called the shots, commanded the best fee, while their films fetched incredible prices. Post Race, Saif Ali Khan has joined the club."

"Saif's talent was acknowledged long back; the actor has delivered sparkling performances in films earlier but Race has consolidated and cemented his status as a star with tremendous pull."

Saif is the perfect combination of a stylish star and a versatile actor and has worked with the most diverse set of directors like Sriram Raghvan, to Kunal Kohli to Farhan Akhtar, Pradeep Sarkar to Homi Adajania to Abbas- Mustan.

Race, his new release, is his second biggest opener in several international markets, after Kal Ho Na Ho.

Business reports have it that Race has garnered a whopping Rs. 22 cr in just three days coming close to Om Shanti Om that had opened to that kind of massive collection. It is expected to garner 35-40 crore nett by this weekend.

The film "raced" ahead worldwide boasting of a collection of $10.5 million in three days.

Saif is all geared to branch out and explore unexplored territories. The actor has just launched his production brand Illuminati Films. A-list directors Shriram Raghvan, Imtiaz Ali and Homi Adjania have been roped in to make films for his banner.

In fact Raghvan will soon embark on Agent Vinod that has Saif in the lead. Plus there's Karan Johar's untitled venture with Kareena.

Like Father, Like Son

This is going to be very much unbelievable for many of those reading this news. Actor Murali’s son is all set to debut as a hero in a movie. Watching Murali – who churned out hits after hits such as Puthu Vasantham, Idhayam, Sundara Travels – playing hero roles all these days, we never realised the actor has reached the age at which point one starts thinking about his child’s career move. And Murali has decided that his son will become a film hero like him, as Murali has finally found some subject in which his son can make a debut.

Vijay, actor Murali’s son, is six feet tall and handsome, and is a first-year engineering student (electronics and communication). For long, almost all the producers of Kollywood have been trying to draw Vijay into their project. But Murali is a protective father. After carefully scrutinizing scripts that came his son’s way all these days, he has picked one that he thinks favours his son’s debut. The film has not yet been named. This film will be produced by Ramanathan, the producer behind films like Nadigan and Thirumathi Pazhanisami. A debutant director, Vishnu Shankar will direct this film.

Since Murali’s son and Ilayathalapathy of Kollywood share names, it has been decided that Murali’s son will don a new screen name, which will be decided pretty soon. The shooting for the film begins on June 10, 2008 and the producers are bent on finishing it before Vijay’s college reopens.

It is to be noted that Murali is acting as a hero in a film called Engal Rasi Nalla Rasi. After completion of this movie, he will do dual roles (as father and son) in Maruavatharam. Really, Murali is one of the “relentlessly young” actors of Tamil Cinema.

From a radio jockey, Shiv Pandit turned into a famous TV personality after his successful stint with modeling. He became ubiquitous because of several ads and then made a mark with the Hindi sitcom F.I.R.After achieving super stardom with IPL; he is an anchor at the IPL matches, he is all set to enamour the viewers of Tamil Cinema.

Youngsters these days are leading a well-planned life and are very keen on fulfilling their ambitions which would have sounded weird or impossible a decade or two ago. And Shiv Pandit is an example of this. A decade or two ago, the very idea of making a career out of TV or Cinema used to serve only as a fantasy that gives relief after a day’s hard work. But times have changed now. People like Shiv Pandit are striving hard to materialize their dreams.

Shiv has signed a movie titled Leelai, which will be directed by a newcomer named Andrew. The female lead will also be a new face. Different models from Mumbai are being approached for this role.

Andrew, Leelai’s director, said that he spotted Shiv in a commercial and he thought he looked exactly the hero that he had imagined for his movie. So he contacted him immediately and asked him to appear for a screen test, which he cleared with ease. Oscar Ravichandran is producing this film. This is one more reason for the film being talked about widely.

A comedy actor donning the role of a hero is not new to Tamil Cinema. We have seen Nagesh, Goundamani, Vivek, Vadivelu do it and now we will see Karunas do it. Yes! Actor Karunas is going to act as a hero in a movie, which has been named Dindigul Sarathi.

But Karunas waited long for his turn. Though he was given plenty of chances to feature as protagonist in a movie, Karunas decided to play it safe until he got a good script. He waited, astutely avoiding scripts that will project him as a caricature or make a trite film, until he found the script for Dindugal Sarathi.

Director G.V. Kumar, who directed Puli Varudhu, will direct this film. Karthika, the fame of Namnadu, will be the heroine of this movie. The music of this film will be composed by Dhina. The shooting of this film will take place in Dindigul and other villages of Southern India.

The movie Paththu: Paththu promises to be as captivating as its title is. This is a thriller produced by Rajeshwari Gnanasambandam and directed by Sathyam.

This film is definitely away from the usual love-based storylines that Kollywood is used to. It is about 6 individuals who get caught in a situatios that happens at 10:10 p.m. during a cricket match between Indian and Pakistan.

The film stars Sona, Sanjith, Thalaivasal Vijay, Venkat, Krishna, and Ashish. Along with Sona, the film also has Abhinayshree, Laksha, Priyanka, and Bhoomika, all of whom add to the glamour quotient of this movie.

The music of this film is composed by L.V. Ganesan

Gemini Labs, which is undergoing a major overhaul to be able to cater to technical needs of Kuselan’s special effects, has decided to expand up its modes of income.

Gemini Labs, who are on the verge of becoming the best film labs in India by this overhaul, have now decided to foray into film production too.

In that line, it has decided to make two films for the beginning; one film with Arya and another with Dhanush. At present, it is in the process of selecting a suitable storyline for these artists. Once it is settled, the plans will materialize.

Looking at the way Gemini Labs is ramping up for Kuselan, one can say it will not leave any stone unturned in film production either. So we are sure to have two blockbusters from them pretty soon. It sure augurs well for Arya and Dhanush too.

Think about Bhoomika Chawla and the picture that emerges in your mind is that of an innocent, homely girl with graceful movements. The roles that she has done so far have created this image. She has one of the most beautiful smiles in tinsel town and is equally popular in Bollywood and South India.

But Bhoomika is ready to move on. You will soon see her in a role where she will be disguised as a man. The role is a challenge to any actress as it requires them to hide their feminine traits and behave in a manly fashion.

Bhoomika started her career as a model, then turned in to acting and acted in all South Indian languages. Her introduction to Bollywood was opposite Salman Khan in Tera Naam. The Sillinu Oru Kaadhal girl is proving that she not only beautiful but brainy too. She has recently started a production firm called Down Down.

This film has Trisha alongside four new faces, who are marking their debut in films as actors. Some of them are not new to cinema though. The film's title brings a deja vu feeling? No wonder! That's because the photo shoot for this film was done in 2007. For some reason, the shooting was delayed and now, it has finally started.

Music is by A.R.Rahman. The film, produced by P. Madan and J. Ganesh, also introduces a new cinematographer, Manoj Paramahamsa.

Rajinikanth’s movies not only create a big hype, but definitely bring big fame to the names behind it. That is yet another reason for even small distributors buying his movies for exorbitant prices. So what is the primary reason? Rajinikanth’s movies come with a guarantee of box office success.

And when two giants like Rajinikanth and Shankar combine, it could never get better. Robot, a science fiction film starring Rajinikanth and directed by Shankar, is being considered as a very important milestone and opportunity by all involved in it, especially by Gemini Laboratories. So much so that Gemini Laboratories decided to undergo a major overhaul to meet all technical demands of the film’s visual effects. It has ensured that most of the equipment necessary for the film’s special effects are installed in its lab. It has constructed big rooms, halls, and studios for the foreign film crew to work in and store equipment they bring. It is also building a big recording theatre to house all latest recording equipment.

By creating a familiar and fully-equipped environment in which the foreign technicians can work comfortably and effectively, Gemini Labs has made sure that Robot crew does not have to shuttle between their parent laboratories and India (which was the state of Dasavathaaram crew). All this investment will pay returns only when movies as grand as Robot or Dasavathaaram happen, which is not too frequent in India. But Gemini Labs still did it all for a Rajinikanth movie. This is not surprising when we look at the fame and attention that Gemini will get by being a part of Robot, the most talked-about movie now.

The much-discussed Bollywood comedy Taxi No. 9211 is now being remade in Tamil by G.V. Films. The proposed name was Taxi, but keeping in line with the trend of having Tamil names, the producers are now looking for a Tamil title for this movie.

Taxi No. 9211 starred Nana Patekar and John Abraham. In the Tamil version of this movie, Pasupathi will do the role of Nana Patekar. The actor to play John Abraham’s role has not yet been decided.

In the Hindi version, actress Sonali Kulkarni (who had worked in May Matham in Tamil) paired up with Nana Patekar. In the Tamil version, Simran is said to pair up with Pasupathi even though it features Sonali Kulkarni too.

The film’s screenplay will be written by Lakshmikanthan.

It is very thoughtful of the filmmakers to have cast Pasupathi in the role of Nana Patekar. He is a very good actor who will do justice to the role performed by Nana, as both of them have some common style of acting and deportment.

Pasupathi is currently working in Kuselan and Vedigundu Murugesan.

Indians, especially Tamils, are very much open to changes, especially when it comes to art. Any worthy art form – be it indigenous or foreign – definitely gets noticed in Tamil Nadu. Films are no exception either. Shah Rukh Khan’s movies do better business in Chennai than in some cities up North. And dubbed and original versions of Hollywood movies do good business, on par with local movies.

In that line, the city has been revelling with the most-happening Hollywood movies these days – Iron Man and Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Both the Tamil dubbed and original versions of these movies have done well so far.

Iron Man, released on May 2, 2008, was about a multi-millionaire who turns into a super-hero after a few life-changing incidents. The film served as a summer bonus for the filmgoers.

And now, release of Chronicles of Narnia’s sequel is the latest bonanza. It is about four siblings who get transported to the land of Narnia, a magic land where animals can talk and trees can walk. The siblings are returning to this land after one year and are very eager to see the land that they rescued from the evil queen (in the first part). But to their horror, they find that their one year is equivalent to 1300 years in Narnian time and the legacy they left behind has been destroyed. They find that Evil King Miraz rules the land ruthlessly and has exiled Caspian, the real heir to the throne. Now they have to and save this land again.

In Hollywood, Iron Man had a very big impact and outperformed The Chronicles of Narnia sequel, but in Tamil Nadu, both of them are doing well. Sometimes movies that do not do well in Hollywood do good business in Tamil Nadu. For example, Hellboy and Van Helsing, which did average business in U.S., were big hits in Chennai.

So it shows that Tamils love comics more than any other race!

This year IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) has recognised A.R. Rahman as the ‘Outstanding Indian contributing to International Cinema’. Rahman is credited with increasing Indian film music’s popularity all over the world by his music compositions. He has been recognized as the ambassador of Indian music.

The award bestowed upon A.R. Rahman is one among the three special recognitions of IIFA, the other two being ‘Outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema’ and ‘Achievment in Indian Cinema’. The other two have been won by eminent director Shyam Benegal and Mumtaz respectively.

Shyam Benegal is considered as one of the best filmmakers of India. He marked his debut with Ankur, the impact of which can be felt even today. Shyam Benegal has a very simple but unique style. At the moment, the director is busy storyboarding for his film on Buddha. He is also working on a comedy subject which has received a lot of attention and is on the verge of completion. It is about a postman of a small village full of illiterate people, who becomes the confidant of everyone by reading them their letters.

Mumtaz, the Bollywood actress who was the queen of every heart in the 70s, has been recognised as an achiever in the Indian Cinema.

These awardees will be presented trophies at IIFA Weekend, which will be held in Bangkok from June 6th to 8th, 2008.
