Multi-lingual actor Abbas is all set to make a comeback in Sandalwood after ten years

Born in Kolkata, brought up in Bangalore, educated in Mumbai and settled in Chennai — that’s actor Abbas’ description in short. The multi-lingual actor is flooded with offers from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industries and is all excited about returning to the Kannada industry after ten years.

The good looking actor is playing a pivotal role in the Kannada movie Appu and Pappu, which will hit the screens in May. The film features an orang-utan for the first time in the history of Indian cinema.

“When I heard the script of Appu and Pappu, it sounded interesting and hence, I became a part of the film. I am touched by the warmth of the film unit. Our journey to Cambodia for shooting was really fun and we bonded like a family,” recalls Abbas.

Is the movie inspired from the Hollywood flick Dunston Checks In? “Yes, but the storyline is totally different. Dunston... deals with comedy, but Appu... is about the sentiments of a father and mother,” avers Abbas.

The talented artiste is also acting in Ramdev, which will be produced in Tamil and Telugu. Directed by S K Basheed, the movie is slated to release in May. “Ramdev is a love triangle with a new concept, which has shades of the Bollywood hit Dhadkan,” he reveals. He is also busy with another Tamil and Telugu consignment Chori Chori, the shooting for which will finish in a few days.

“My journey in this glittery world started in 1994 and it’s been really interesting and memorable. I have acted with almost all the great artistes like Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Ajith and Madhavan and have learnt many things from them,” he says modestly.
He is all praises for Sandalwood. “Kannada industry is now full of young blood and innovative ideas. Some experiments are also going on which is a positive trend,” he feels.

When asked about the secret behind his good physique, he replies, “I do yoga everyday for an hour and go cycling on Sundays for nearly 40 kilometres. I also play football and visit the gym frequently. These things help me keep fit.”

50 city cinemas theatres to show IPL matches

It is cricket-ainment time at cinema halls across India, with nearly 650 screens gearing up for live telecasts of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, which will begin from Friday and continue for more than six weeks. Sources said that the final number of screens could cross 700. Cine-goers will get to watch matches without commercial breaks and also avail of other incentives. Topmost among them is master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s autographed bat, which will be circulated across all cinemas and later auctioned. Sanjay Gaikwad, of UFO Moviez, said, “A bat Tendulkar has used will be auctioned off.’’ The funds will go to Apnalaya, an NGO endorsed by him.

Tendulkar also auctioned off the first theatre ticket for the matches. From a base price of Rs 5 lakh it went for Rs 11 lakh. The money will also go to Apnalaya. Tendulkar said, “This is a very good initiative and if high-content cricket reaches the remotest areas of the country more and more youngsters will be encouraged to play the game.’’

In Mumbai, about 50 cinema halls will screen matches, including Cinemax, New Excelsior, Roxy, Meghraj (Vashi), Gem (Bandra), Inox, Fame, PVR, Big and Broadway (Kandivli).

While the cinemas are geared up for the games, there is a small hitch in opening the a dva n c e b o o k - ings. Inox cinemas’ vice-president (marketing) Harshvardhan Gangurde said, “We are all set, but await a formal notification from the state government on taxes. Otherwise, things are in place.’’ There will be no entertainment tax exemption on IPL tickets. Gaikwad added, “The government will be charging about 20 to 34%, which is the same for any film ticket.’’ Sources said tickets would cost Rs 250 to Rs 300, the cost of an average movie ticket on weekends.

Some cinemas will offer alcohol. Devang Sampat, vice president, Cinemax Cinemas, said, “Corporate bookings have started and we are offering alcohol with them.’’

Most team sponsors have already done block bookings for the entire IPL season. A source said, “There is a lot of demand for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, who probably have the maximum sponsors on board. Last season, KKR matches got the maximum eyeballs. With Tendulkar in tremendous form, there will definitely be a mad rush for his matches too.’’ Cinemas will offer cricketing merchandise and have cheerleaders, celebrities and live bands. Gaikwad said, “We are trying to bring the stadium into the theatre. There are lot of small towns where bookings are full and we have to add screens. In Nagpur it’s house-full even before the tournament begins.’’ In some states, including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, cinema halls will not be able to screen the matches as film producers have objected because there would be fewer screens to show local movies. aadhavan get censor board clean ‘U’ certificate

Surya-Nayanthara starrer ‘Aadhavan’ gets clean ‘U’ certificate as the censor board officials have been elated for having made a clean entertainer. The officials watched the film today and patted the shoulder of Udayanidhi Stalin.

Kamal on why he declined Quick Gun Murugan

Kamal Haasan revealed that he was initially offered the lead role in Quick Gun Murugan, but he declined the offer as it was not a novel concept in South India. The actor said that though some scripts are good or excellent they simply do not translate into a movie due to poor market demands. Kamal said that he regrets such situations as he could not make films that are close to his heart.

He was quoted as saying, “I would rate that as one of the biggest regrets of my life. Over the years, I have liked many scripts but they just couldn’t materialize into films. I feel sad that many times I couldn’t do films due to market demands; there were scripts begging to be made. I think not doing those good scripts amounts to infanticide.”

பொதுவாக இந்த மாதிரி படங்களில் முதல்வர் போன்ற பாத்திரங்கள் வரும்போது யாராவது டம்மி பீஸை காட்டி கடுப்பேற்றுவார்கள். ஆனால் கமல் தனது செல்வாக்கைப் பயன்படுத்தி நிஜ முதல்வரையே நடிக்க வைத்திருக்கிறார், குரல் மூலம்! படத்தில் காட்டப்படுவதும்கூட நிஜ முதல்வரின் வீடுதான்.

இதுபோன்ற நெருக்கடிக்கு மாநகரம் உள்ளாகும்போது, உயர்மட்ட அதிகாரிகள் படும் பாடு, நிலைமையைச் சமாளிக்க ஒரு நேர்மையான காவல்துறை அதிகாரி மேற்கொள்ளும் முடிவுகள், அதனால் சக அதிகாரிகளுடன் ஏற்படும் உரசல், தனது கீழ்நிலை அதிகாரிகளுடன் ஒரு கமிஷனர் கொண்டிருக்கும் நட்பு ரீதியிலான-அதேநேரம் கடமை மாறாத உறவு… இவற்றையெல்லாம் மிக மிக அருகிருந்து பார்ப்பதைப் போன்ற உணர்வை இந்தப் படம் ஏற்படுத்துகிறது.

படத்தின் பெரும் பலம் வசனங்கள் (இரா முருகன்).

முதல்வருக்கும் கமிஷனருக்கும் நடக்கும் உரையாடலின் ஒரு சிறு பகுதியைப் பாருங்கள்…

“நிலைமை எப்படியிருக்கு மாரார்?”

(ஆங்கிலத்தில்)”எல்லாம் கடவுளின் கையிலிருக்கிறது சார்!”

“அய்யய்யோ… அது சிக்கலான கையாச்சே”

தீவிரவாதம், அவர்களை ஒழிப்பதில் மென்மையான அணுகுமுறை காட்டும் அரசுகள் பற்றி கமல் பேசும் வசனங்களில் தனிமனிதனின் கோபத்துக்குள்ள வீரியம் தெறிக்கிறது.

ஆனால், “மும்பையில் குண்டுவெடித்தால் நாம் டிவியில் செய்தி பார்த்துவிட்டு, வேறு சானலுக்கு மாறுகிறோம். அதிலும் தமிழ்ச் சேனல்களில் அதைக் காட்டுவதுகூட இல்லை. காரணம் வேறு எங்கோ நடக்கிற உணர்வில் நாம் இருப்பதுதான். நாம பேசறது வேற மொழிதானே… எவனுக்கோ நடக்குது நமக்கென்ன என்ன அலட்சியம்…” என்று கமல் கூறும்போது அதை ஏனோ மனம் ஒப்பவில்லை.

இதற்குக் காரணம் இந்திய அரசும் அரசியல்வாதிகளும்தானே… தமிழ்நாட்டுக்காரன் இந்த நிமிடம் வரை வேறு நாட்டு பிரஜை மாதிரிதானே நடத்தப்படுகிறான்… அவனது குரலுக்கு ஏது மரியாதை… அவனது விருப்பத்தை எவன் கேட்கிறான். டெல்லியில் முடிவெடுத்துத் திணிப்பதுதானே காலம் காலமாய் நடக்கிறது. எனவே கமலின் இந்த வாதத்தை மட்டும் ஏற்க முடியவில்லை. ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் உதைபடும் இந்தியனுக்காகவோ, மும்பையில் செத்துப்போன இந்தியனுக்காகவோ தமிழன் அலட்டிக்கொள்ளாமலே இருந்துவிட்டதன் காரணம் இதுதான்!

தமிழனுக்கு வந்த துன்பங்களுக்காக கவலைப்பட்ட இந்தியர்கள் எத்தனை பேர்? மும்பை குண்டுவெடிப்பை மையப்படுத்தித்தான் அவர்களால் படங்கள் செய்ய முடிந்தது. கோவை குண்டுவெடிப்பெல்லாம் அவர்களால் கண்டுகொள்ளப்படவே இல்லையே.

ஆகவே இந்த ஒரு கருத்தை அவர் சொல்லாமலேகூட விட்டிருக்கலாம். மனிதத்துக்கு எதிரான தீவிரவாதம் ஒழிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதில் மாற்றுக் கருத்தில்லை. அதில் ஒருமைப்பாடு பற்றிய ட்யூஷன் எதற்கு? நதியின் ஓட்டம் மேலிருந்து கீழ்நோக்கி பாய்வதுதான் இயல்பானது!

அதேநேரம் தீவிரவாதத்துக்கு மத முகமூடி மாட்டிப் பார்ப்பதில் அர்த்தமில்லை என்கிற வாதம் ஏற்கக் கூடியதே. தீவிரவாதமென்றாலே முஸ்லிம்கள்தான் என்று நிலை நிறுத்தாமல், இந்துக்களின் தீவிரவாதமும் சிறுபான்மையினரை குஜராத்தில் காவு கொண்டதை கதைக்குள் பதிவு செய்திருப்பது சாமர்த்தியமானது.

ஹீரோ லால்!

படத்தின் மிகச் சிறந்த அம்சம் பாத்திரங்களுக்கு தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கும் கலைஞர்கள்… ஒவ்வொருமே ஒப்பற்ற மணிகளாய் ஜொலிக்கிறார்கள்.

படத்தில் தன்னை பின்னுக்கு நகர்த்திக் கொண்டு மோகன்லாலையே பிரதானப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார் கமல், அந்தப் பாத்திரத்தின் தன்மை அப்படி என்பதால்.

படம் பார்ப்பவர்களின் மனதை அப்படியே முழுமையாய் ஆக்கிரமிக்கிறார் மோகன்லால். நிச்சயம் இதைவிட பெட்டராக யாராலும் நடித்திருக்க முடியாது. அவரது மலையாளத் தமிழ் உச்சரிப்பு பாத்திரத்தின் நம்பகத் தன்மையை இன்னும் அதிகப்படுத்துகிறது. தீவிரவாதிகளை அழைத்துவர அனுப்பப்படும் தனது நம்பகமான இரு உயரதிகாரிகளுடனும் அவர் உரையாடும் காட்சி, குருஷேத்ரா மோகன்லாலை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

உள்துறை அதிகாரியாக வரும் லட்சுமி யாதார்த்த நடிப்பைக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். அவருக்கும் மோகன்லாலுக்கும் இடையே நிகழும் அந்த பனிப்போர்… எப்படியும் ஆளும் வர்க்கத்தின் கைகளில் பந்தாடப்படுவோம் என்ற நிச்சயமற்ற தன்மையை மோகன்லால் காட்டும் விதம்… ஹாட்ஸ் ஆஃப் மோகன்லால்!

ரிங் மாஸ்டர் கமல்…

இந்த முறை கமல் ரிங் மாஸ்டர் மாதிரி அமைதியாக உட்கார்ந்தபடி, ஆனால் தனக்கு-படத்துக்கு தேவையான அனைத்தையும் அதற்குத் தகுந்த கலைஞர்களிடமிருந்து சரியான விகிதத்தில் வாங்கியிருக்கிறார்.

தன் கண்முன் ஒரு சகோதரிக்கு நிகழ்ந்த கொடூரத்தை அவர் விவரிக்கும் போது, நம்மையுமறியாமல் கண்ணீர்.

எல்லாம் முடிந்ததும் மின்னல் வேகத்தில் அந்த சாதனங்களை மறைத்து கொளுத்திவிட்டு ஒன்றுமே நடக்காத மாதிரி காய்கறி பைகளோடு வெளியேறும் விதமும், கமிஷனரை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போது, குறுக்கிடும் போன்காலுக்கு அவர் பதில் சொல்லும் விதமும் டிபிகல் கமல் ஸ்டைல்!

அவர் யார் எனத் தெரிந்தும் கமிஷனர் விட்டுவிடப் போகிறார் என்பதை முன்கூட்டியே யூகித்துவிட முடிகிறது.

கணேஷ் வெங்கட்ராம், இந்தப் படத்தின் அட்டகாசமான, யாருமே எதிர்பாராத ஒரு பாத்திரம். அச்சு அசலான அதிரடிப் படை வீரரை கண்முன் நிறுத்துகிறார் மனிதர்.

பரத் ரெட்டி, ஸ்ரீமன், சிவாஜி, சந்தானபாரதி, அனுஜா, பூனம்.. அட கடைசியாக வரும் அந்த ஐஐடி ட்ராப் அவுட் என அனைவரது நடிப்புமே, ஒரு மில்லிமீட்டர் கூட பிசகாமல் அத்தனை கச்சிதம்!

ஒளிப்பதிவு, எடிட்டிங் என எதிலுமே முதல் தரத்தைத் தந்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஸ்ருதி பல இடங்களில் தனது இசையை மவுனிக்க வைத்திருப்பது புத்திசாலித்தனம். மற்றபடி ஒரு இசையமைப்பாளராக இதில் அவருக்கு பெரிய ஸ்கோப் இல்லை. அல்லா ஜானே… பாடலை கமல் பாடியிருக்கும் விதம் புதுசு.

‘இலக்கியம், ஜனரஞ்சகம், நவீனத்துவம் என எந்த வடிவிலிருந்தாலும் மக்களுக்காக செய்யப்படும் நல்ல கலைகள் என்றுமே தோற்பதில்லை’ என்பது நவீன இலக்கியத்தின் முன்னோடி மக்சீம் கார்க்கியின் வாக்கு. அதை உன்னைப்போல் ஒருவனும் நிரூபிக்கும்!

Unnaipol Oruvan movie review

After keeping the movie buffs in suspense over its release due to its legal wrangles, Unnaipol Oruvan, the Tamil remake of ‘A Wednesday,’ produced by Raaj Kamal Films International has finally made it much to the relief of everyone associated with it. The job of director Chakri Toleti is easy and difficult – easy as a readymade story was in front of him and hard as he has to make the content relatable to Tamil audience. By and large, the film has remained loyal to the original script.

What could happen when a common man is pushed beyond his realms of patience and what are its consequences? Unnaipol Oruvan throws light on these issues and the triumph of humanity and its effect on national integration. Indirectly, the film says terrorism can only be held in check by terrorism.

UPO is about certain events that happen in one busy day in a Police Commissioner’s life. He receives an anonymous phone call asking for a release of four terrorists in police custody. Although the commissioner takes the call lightly, he realizes the seriousness of the issue soon and a group is formed to tackle the demands of this call. The gripping events that unfold subsequently are recounted in a riveting manner.

Mohanlal brings forth the responsible Police Commissioner and the unruffled manner in which he deals with a tense situation justifies his recent military award for acting. Kamal, as the angered citizen, has portrayed his emotions and feelings in the right measure. In the last few scenes, when he picks the vegetables from the ground in a composed manner suggests that he is after all an ordinary citizen. His pain and twinge are highly palpable when he is keen to finish off the terrorists. The sequences where Kamal has used his personal experience are enjoyable as regards to non-receipt of voters ID card.

All the characters have been understood and essayed perfectly by the artistes. Anuja Iyer, as the TV reporter, has risen up to the occasion and so does Ganesh Venkatram. Camera and music are in sync with the mood of the film and enhance the tension when required. Although UPO has its flaws, they are negligible when compared to the film in totality.

All in all, a brilliant work which will be appreciated by every socially responsible citizen of India.

Earlier ‘Yogi’ was sure to be bought by Kalaignar TV, though the channel did not buy the movie, it was almost confirmed that ‘Yogi’ was for the channel. The audio launch of the movie was also telecasted live on it. But out of the blue, things turned topsy-turvy.

We don’t have a clue as to how the film slipped into the hands of Sun TV. Everyone in the industry is actually surprised about this sudden twist in the track.

But according to our sources, it’s learnt that the film went on to the hands of Sun TV as one of the close friends of Ameer advised him to do so. The friend advised Ameer by saying that “Yogi is a good film and you have a first-class opening as a hero also. So, don’t throw away this good chance. Give this movie to a firm that gives the best promotion”.
