Born in Kolkata, brought up in Bangalore, educated in Mumbai and settled in Chennai — that’s actor Abbas’ description in short. The multi-lingual actor is flooded with offers from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada industries and is all excited about returning to the Kannada industry after ten years.

The good looking actor is playing a pivotal role in the Kannada movie Appu and Pappu, which will hit the screens in May. The film features an orang-utan for the first time in the history of Indian cinema.

“When I heard the script of Appu and Pappu, it sounded interesting and hence, I became a part of the film. I am touched by the warmth of the film unit. Our journey to Cambodia for shooting was really fun and we bonded like a family,” recalls Abbas.

Is the movie inspired from the Hollywood flick Dunston Checks In? “Yes, but the storyline is totally different. Dunston... deals with comedy, but Appu... is about the sentiments of a father and mother,” avers Abbas.

The talented artiste is also acting in Ramdev, which will be produced in Tamil and Telugu. Directed by S K Basheed, the movie is slated to release in May. “Ramdev is a love triangle with a new concept, which has shades of the Bollywood hit Dhadkan,” he reveals. He is also busy with another Tamil and Telugu consignment Chori Chori, the shooting for which will finish in a few days.

“My journey in this glittery world started in 1994 and it’s been really interesting and memorable. I have acted with almost all the great artistes like Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Ajith and Madhavan and have learnt many things from them,” he says modestly.
He is all praises for Sandalwood. “Kannada industry is now full of young blood and innovative ideas. Some experiments are also going on which is a positive trend,” he feels.

When asked about the secret behind his good physique, he replies, “I do yoga everyday for an hour and go cycling on Sundays for nearly 40 kilometres. I also play football and visit the gym frequently. These things help me keep fit.”

It is cricket-ainment time at cinema halls across India, with nearly 650 screens gearing up for live telecasts of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, which will begin from Friday and continue for more than six weeks. Sources said that the final number of screens could cross 700. Cine-goers will get to watch matches without commercial breaks and also avail of other incentives. Topmost among them is master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s autographed bat, which will be circulated across all cinemas and later auctioned. Sanjay Gaikwad, of UFO Moviez, said, “A bat Tendulkar has used will be auctioned off.’’ The funds will go to Apnalaya, an NGO endorsed by him.

Tendulkar also auctioned off the first theatre ticket for the matches. From a base price of Rs 5 lakh it went for Rs 11 lakh. The money will also go to Apnalaya. Tendulkar said, “This is a very good initiative and if high-content cricket reaches the remotest areas of the country more and more youngsters will be encouraged to play the game.’’

In Mumbai, about 50 cinema halls will screen matches, including Cinemax, New Excelsior, Roxy, Meghraj (Vashi), Gem (Bandra), Inox, Fame, PVR, Big and Broadway (Kandivli).

While the cinemas are geared up for the games, there is a small hitch in opening the a dva n c e b o o k - ings. Inox cinemas’ vice-president (marketing) Harshvardhan Gangurde said, “We are all set, but await a formal notification from the state government on taxes. Otherwise, things are in place.’’ There will be no entertainment tax exemption on IPL tickets. Gaikwad added, “The government will be charging about 20 to 34%, which is the same for any film ticket.’’ Sources said tickets would cost Rs 250 to Rs 300, the cost of an average movie ticket on weekends.

Some cinemas will offer alcohol. Devang Sampat, vice president, Cinemax Cinemas, said, “Corporate bookings have started and we are offering alcohol with them.’’

Most team sponsors have already done block bookings for the entire IPL season. A source said, “There is a lot of demand for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, who probably have the maximum sponsors on board. Last season, KKR matches got the maximum eyeballs. With Tendulkar in tremendous form, there will definitely be a mad rush for his matches too.’’ Cinemas will offer cricketing merchandise and have cheerleaders, celebrities and live bands. Gaikwad said, “We are trying to bring the stadium into the theatre. There are lot of small towns where bookings are full and we have to add screens. In Nagpur it’s house-full even before the tournament begins.’’ In some states, including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, cinema halls will not be able to screen the matches as film producers have objected because there would be fewer screens to show local movies. Oscar producers urge viewers to tune in early

LOS ANGELES – The people behind Sunday's Oscars show are urging people to tune in early for one of the program's best sequences.

Bill Mechanic, who is producing the awards ceremony with Adam Shankman, promised "the most dynamic opening, from drama to spectacle to humor, that has ever been staged."

Shankman said the show will be funny, lively and fun.

"People hate it when I say this," he said, "but I always say this is the best-dressed reality competition show on TV."

The two men joined film academy President Tom Sherak on the red carpet outside the Kodak Theatre for a brief news conference Friday about the big show.

Dismissing a gloomy weather forecast, Sherak said definitively that it will not rain at Oscar time. Mechanic quipped that it would "rain humor." And Shankman said that when you produce the Oscars, there's no one you can't call, so "I just called God."

"Like everything in Hollywood, it's a negotiation," he said.

The show will be heavy on humor, thanks to the hosting duo of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, Mechanic said, adding that the Oscar show hasn't had two hosts since 1928.

Expect "greater emotional content" too, he said: "We want this to touch people."

The Oscar honchos also announced a new round of presenters: Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana and Pedro Almodovar will appear on the telecast. He complained that he was chased down by Nithyananda's goons from Bengaluru right up to Salem and that he was lucky to escape to Chennai. According to the police Lenin had sent across 63 copies of the sex tape to various media houses and other institutions, besides important persons across the country and 23 more to the Nithyananda ashrams and devotees abroad. There was also a 5-page letter from a 23-year-old woman, an inmate of the Bidadi ashram who claimed that Nithyananda had raped and sexually harassed dozens of women in the ashram. Nithyananda, is still absconding and the police are hot on his trail. Some have claimed that he is at the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad.

Even as speculation continues over the whereabouts of Swami Nithyananda, who is at the centre of a controversy now, his lawyer on Friday claimed that the godman had not absconded but was in Varanasi. “He is attending the Kumbh Mela, along with 4,000 devotees from world over, and is scheduled to return on March 18,” M Shreedhar, who is representing the godman in Madras High Court, told Express.Asked about Nithyananda’s association with the woman seen with him in the video that had created a furore, Shreedhar said the film star started visiting the ashram to overcome depression caused by a failed marriage and soon became a devotee of the swami. Nithyananda was seen in a compromising position with the actress in the video aired by a Tamil TV channel recently.Asserting that the clippings in the video were morphed, the advocate said the image of the actress too was fake.“The woman in the clippings always has her neck covered, which is typical of a morphed video,” he said.“Besides, her bindi is intact in all the scenes. The bedroom too is brightly lit,” he added.Asked about the whereabouts of the actress, he said she would not appear in public now, as she would be forced to file a complaint against the swami. “This, she would never do,” he added.Alleging that ego clash among inmates in the ashram could have resulted in the making of the video, he conceded that money too could have had a major role to play.Shreedhar alleged that the group that made the video and the TV channel that aired it had “struck a deal”.The TV channel demanded Rs 50 crore from the swami, the advocate claimed.

இந்த விவகாரத்தில் மட்டும் போலீசார் மெத்தனமாக செயல்படுவது ஏன் என்று தெரியவில்லை. என் வீட்டில் நடைபெற்ற தாக்குதல் சம்பவம் குறித்து தமிழ் ஆர்வலர்கள் பலர் என்னுடன் போனில் தொடர்பு கொண்டு ஆலோசித்து வருகிறார்கள். அடுத்த கட்ட நடவடிக்கை குறித்து இன்று மாலையில் முடிவு செய்ய உள்ளேன். அதே நேரத்தில் அஜீத்குமார் மீது வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்து அவரை கைது செய்யா விட்டால் மிகப்பெரிய போராட்டத்தில் நான் இறங்குவேன்.

Alexander, who had brain surgery seven years ago, died hours after Macclesfield's League Two (fourth division) defeat at Notts County on Tuesday night.

He had been involved in football for more than 35 years, initially as a player with Grimsby Town, Stockport County and Mansfield Town along with many non-League clubs and played international football for St Lucia.

He then became the first black manager in the Football League when he took over at Lincoln City in 1993 before spells at Peterborough and then Macclesfield.

Next Saturday's game against Hereford United would have been his 100th with the Cheshire club.

"He was a larger than life character -- an honest man, a splendid man and he will be missed by people in all walks of life," assistant manager Gary Simpson told Sky Sports News

People belonging to Bidadi village and surroundings, about 35 km from here attacked an 'ashram' belonging to a 'young swamiji' after a television channel showed shots of him in a compromising position with an actres today.

A large number of local people thronged the sprawling ashram of Swami Nityananda on the outskirts of the city after the TV expose of his 'sex acts', smashed the front office and tore down the flex material on which a large portrait of the Godman was printed, and burnt them.

Nityananda Swami, who is quite popular attracting a large number of devotees with his lucid style of interpreting philosophies of life and makes appearances on TV channels, was purportedly shown on the channel in a compromising position.

A footage showing the Swamiji in compromising position with a popular Tamil actress was released by Sun News on Tuesday, Mar 2, leading to violence at the Swamiji's ashrams. The video showed that the man is Swami Nithyananda. However, the woman's face is blurred and the identity of the actress is yet to be confirmed.

The video, which came as a massive shock to the godman's followers, has led to widespread protests. In Coimbatore, angry followers took to streets and vandalised property.

"He is missing," said Devaraj, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Ramanagaram district, under whose limits the ashram is located at Bidadi near Bangalore.

The Bangalore-based ashram manager Sevananda today filed a complaint with police, stating he had received calls from Chennai, threatening to expose the alleged sleazy activities of Swami, in his early thirties, hailing from Thiruvanamalai in Tamil Nadu.

In the complaint, Sevananada said the caller threatened to provide the "footage" to the media and had demanded money not to release it. Sevananada said the clippings showing Swami in poor light are "morphed".

The ashram has several branches across India and 13 abroad.

After the video clippings were aired, many people gathered before the ashram.

Meanwhile at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, said a committee would be formed to look into what action can be taken into the incident.

Endorsing the view that such incidents involving self-styled godmen are "on the rise" in the state, he said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department "will see what action can be taken in such cases."

Meanwhile, activists of "Jaya Karnataka" an organisation founded by former underworld don Muthappa Rai, damaged banners and buntings and window panes of the ashram building, alleging that Rai's name was being misused to threaten some devotees.

Police said they have rushed forces to protect properties of the ashram and are yet to register a case.

Six advocates of the Madras High Court filed a complaint with the Chennai police commissioner, seeking action against Nityananda. Rama Sivasankar, one of the advocates, said they had sought action under Sec 294(b) IPC, which relates to obscenity.

Earlier, protests broke out in different parts of Tamil Nadu, demanding the arrest of Swami and closure of his ashrams in various parts of the state and country.

The protesters burnt his effigies in Coimbatore and Kumbakonam, while some of Swami's posters were torn down in Tiruvannamalai.

At Coimbatore, various groups including Hindu Makkal Katchi and Periyar Dravida Kazhagam staged protests. About 25 persons were arrested for trying to burn his effigy.

Nithyananda has a big following in India, and in many countries around the world, including Malaysia and the US.
