Hot Flicks: The Summer's 10 Best Movies

Sunday, August 31, 2008 |

Labor Day marks the end of this historic summer-movie run, packed with a diverse selection of choices for moviegoers—and tons and tons of money for Hollywood. Why? Because the movies were good. Really good. Here's a quick look at my picks for the 10 best movies from the summer of '08:

10. Traitor: Clearly, Don Cheadle's been hanging with Matt Damon so much, he wanted to make his own Bourne-style film—and he made a pretty good one while he was at it.

9. Mongol: A sweeping epic for the ages surrounding the early life of Genghis Khan during his days as a slave, before he conquered half the world and was then sucked into a phone booth and taken to San Dimas, Calif., where he destroyed a sporting-goods store. Wait, I might be mixing this up with Bill & Ted...

8. The House Bunny: Even though my dialogue was cut out of the film, Anna Faris was the funniest actresses at the movies this summer, hands-down.

7. Son of Rambow: A Sundance favorite from England, featuring talented young actors whose characters love Rambo movies so much, they go out and make their own. Brilliant.

6. American Teen: Another film from Sundance that documents the lives of teens in Indiana. A refreshing break from High School Musical to say the least.

5. The Wackness: aka the story of my life growing up in New York—minus the ice cream cart.

4. Bra Boys: Aussie doc about surfers narrated by Russell Crowe that should be turned into a scripted feature.

3. Tropic Thunder: Some found it offensive, which I respect and understand. I, however, found it funny as s--t.

2. Iron Man: Director Jon Favreau exceeded the enormous expectations for this film, thanks to spot-on casting and Marvelous storytelling.

1. The Dark Knight: Batman. The Joker. Harvey Dent. My man Debo from Friday as that prisoner on the boat. What else could you want from a summer movie?

But enough out of me. What did you think was the best flick of the season? Sound off in the comments

According to inside sources, Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherji had a fight amongst themselves. As a result of which, they both had even stopped communicating with each other.

Sources revealed, "Rani was upset by the treatment her once special banner, Yash Raj films had been meting out to her post the flopping of her Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic. She was getting the feelers about her no longer being the blue eyed girl of the prestigious banner.

There was no big project announced keeping her in mind and she only had just one film with them that too being directed by a debutant director. But she had kept quiet over this matter despite it all being extremely frustrating for her.

Just later then, Aditya Chopra confronted her over a matter that came in the press.

It is a well known fact that Adi likes to maintain huge secrecy concerning his projects. He was therefore very miffed with Rani that she spoke some off the record things about her film with Yash Raj to her media friends.

What she spoke to them came out in the press and Adi didn't like it one bit. But as he confronted her over this all her boiled up anger came out and she questioned him over his changed attitude towards her post the flopping of TPTM.

Well this further led to a huge argument between the two and they both parted ways refusing to talk to one another. But just a week later Adi took the first step in reconciling their spoiled relation and asked for a meeting with her. Rani agreed and after this meeting they were back to being friends again!"

"Where's the party tonight"

|

It's a common knowledge that actress Kajol shares a very good rapport with filmmaker Karan Johar. Recently we got to see a glimpse of their sweet camaraderie at Malaika Arora Khan's 31 st birthday party, where the duo partied till the wee hours of the morning.
They came together with hand in hand and rocked the dance floor like anything. Also there was Shahid Kapoor and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri, Salman Khan and his girlfriend Katrina Kaif enjoyed happy time in the party. Salman's father Salim Khan, mother Salma and Helen were also present in the party. Malaika Arora Khan's sister actress Amrita Arora played a perfect host. Preity Zinta also spotted in the party in rocking mood; however the centre of the focus was Shah Rukh and Salman, who got together in the party and talked with each other putting a full stop to the all speculation on their much-talked-about rivalry. .

Monday, August 25, 2008 |

MUBAI Night Shyamalan’s The Happening co-produced by UTV and 20th Century Fox, released worldwide on June 13, has grossed $31.5 million in US box office in its three-day weekend. Apart from the US, the film has made an additional $30 million from the rest of the world. It was released with over 4,500 prints across 2,986 theatres across North America, and an additional 5,600 prints world-wide. The film was made for $55 million. The Incredible Hulk, which was released on the same weekend, at an estimated production cost of $150 million, which is close to three times that of The Happening, grossed $54.5 million in the US domestic box office. Sixth Sense, which was M Night’s first release, had an opening of $26 million at US box office. What is interesting is that despite bad reviews, the movie managed a strong opening weekend. If one had to compare the movie by its box office performance, the movie is on par with The Unbreakable.

This is UTV’s second Hollywood release, the first one being Namesake, also a co-production with Fox, which was produced for $18 million and raked in millionInternational industry estimates place The Happening in third place for the weekend, behind The Incredible Hulk and Kung Fu Panda. However, the film beat the Incredible Hulk in foreign markets. Hulk, however, was screened in 93 territories while The Happening was shown in 88 markets. In the US, it is estimated to close its run with about $75 million. Coming to the domestic market or rather the regional market, Kamal Hassan’s Dasavataram raked in Rs 3 crore in Chennai, and Rs 21 crore for the whole of Tamil Nadu. which got about 80% occupancy, the film grossed about Rs 60 lakh in the first three days of its running. The film is anticipated to rake in close to Rs 100 crore as its theatrical revenue at the end of this week, as Chennai theatre owners state that the bookings for the next 10 days are house-full. If compared to Rajnikant’s Sivaji the film grossed over 25 crore in its first one week. Given the current figures, Kamal Hassan is currently one up.
